Anger is a normal and natural emotion that rises in every person in appropriate circumstances. It is natural to experience feelings of anger in situations which you don't agree with, when something feels deeply wrong or unfair or when you are not respected. Although anger is typically viewed as a negative emotion, it can be very to motivate an individual and help him in achieving his goals.
However, anger can become a significant problem when it is expressed in unhelpful ways, which often impact an individual 's day-to-day life, causing problems in areas such as home, work, school or with the law.
Steps towards anger management
Step.1 - Start to understand your anger
Anger is an emotion like any other, and the first step towards being able to control any emotion is to understand why it happens.
Many people use anger as a way to cover up other emotions, such as fear, vulnerability or embarrassment. This is particularly true for people who were not encouraged to express their emotions as children, but it can apply to anyone.
When you start to feel angry, look behind your anger to see if you can identify what you are really feeling.
Step.2 - Know your triggers and signs
We all have certain things that make us angry, and also telltale signs that we are loosing our anger. Learning to recognize both can make it easier to stop before you loose your anger.
It is easy to recognize the signs of anger. For some people, it is increase in heartbeat as anger is linked to adrenaline; for others, it is increase in breathing rate or for still others, you may tense your muscles.
Triggers are often very personal which may include negative thoughts and judgements by people or people or places that you do not like.
Step.3 - Learn ways to cool down your temper
Just as we all have triggers for anger, we also have ways to cool down. Some useful techniques include:
- Consciously breathing more slowly and relaxing.
- Focus on how you feel physically
- Slowly backward counting from ten
- Stretching out your body
- Manage your thoughts
